Exhibiting Life
Among Jupiter’s 95 moons, Europa is the most prospective choice for a habitable environment similar to that of Earth’s. An ocean lays underneath a thick layer of ice covering the entire planetary mass, potentially containing and preserving lifeforms. The project centers around an exhibition located on the outskirts of Chicago, overlooking Lake Michigan and out into the vastness of the unobstructed sky. The architectural structure takes inspiration from the moon’s icy surface to create a simple yet dynamic profile. White plates of concrete, reminiscent of slabs of ice, cover the icicle form of the building. The remaining spaces between are transparent, creating a space that feels open and full of natural light. The exhibition is placed in the center of the floor, with the remaining interior and ceiling seeming out of reach with its extensive height, mimicking the impressive lengths one must achieve in order to obtain evidence of new life from a foreign location.
